The Ford Explorer is one of America's most popular three-row midsize SUVs. It's known for its power, comfort, and towing capacity.
Comfort and Power the Family Will Appreciate
The 2024 Ford Explorer comes with three rows of seats that can fit between six and seven passengers comfortably. There's plenty of room for your luggage, supplies, and even the family dog. Ford has not released the trim lineup for the 2024 Explorer, but most auto reviewers believe the 2024 Explorer will have the same eight-trim lineup as the 2023 Explorer.
Depending on the trim, the comfort and convenience features will include leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Your family can stay entertained while on adventures with technology features such as an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium sound system.
Engine Options and Specifications
Ford will most likely keep the same engine options that the 2023 Explorer offers, including:
- A 2.3-liter turbocharged, direct injection Ti-VCT EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with an output of 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
- A 3.0-liter EcoBoost V-6 twin-turbocharged engine that delivers 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.
- A 3.3-liter naturally aspired Hybrid V-6 engine that outputs 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque.
All the Explorer's engines pair with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. Across the lineup, the 2024 Explorer will come standard with rear-wheel drive and the option to upgrade to traction-grabbing intelligent four-wheel drive. If you plan on towing or driving on backcountry roads for a road trip or on snowy roads for a ski adventure, choose the four-wheel-drive system.
Suspension System
Ford has built the Explorer for adventure driving and smooth handling. Across the lineup, the Explorer's suspension system comprises the following components:
- MacPherson strut front suspension with a 32 mm front stabilizer bar.
- Gas-pressurized hydraulic front shocks.
- Multilink independent rear suspension with a 22 mm rear stabilizer bar.
- Gas-pressurized hydraulic rear shocks.
- Electronic power-assisted steering.
- Power four-wheel disc with an anti-lock braking system.
All trims come with Ford's terrain management system to help the Explorer navigate over various terrains. You also get a 3.58 non-limited-slip rear axle (except for the Timberline trim and Hybrid V-6 engine), trailer sway control, and the optional hill-descent control feature.
If you and your family are ready for backroad or off-road adventures, choose the Timberline trim. This trim builds on the existing Explorer suspension system but replaces the non-limited-slip rear axle with a 3.58 Torsen limited-slip rear axle for better control and grip when driving on challenging trails. The Timberline trim also comes with protective underbody skid plates as well as specialized off-road front struts and rear shocks. Further, this 2024 Explorer trim comes standard with hill-descent control and SelectShift capability with paddle shifters to control the 10-speed automatic transmission.
Towing Capacity
One of the reasons the Ford Explorer is popular is due to its ability to tow a small boat or trailer. Your family can haul extra cargo or adventure toys such as kayaks or standup paddleboards in a trailer or jet skis or small personal watercraft on the trailer.
Based on the 2023 Explorer, we expect the following towing capacities for the 2024 model:
- The 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with rear-wheel drive: 5,300 pounds.
- The 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with four-wheel drive: 5,300 pounds.
- The 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine with rear-wheel drive: 5,600 pounds.
- The 3.0-liter EcoBoost engine with all-wheel drive: 5,600 pounds.
- The 3.3-liter Hybrid V-6 engine with either drivetrain: 5,000 pounds.
- The 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine with four-wheel drive, which is exclusive for the off-road-ready Timberline trim: 5,300 pounds.
You'll need to have the proper equipment as well as the trailer tow package to get the maximum towing capacity for each engine and drivetrain. Contact our professional and friendly team to learn more about the towing capacity and equipment you need to haul equipment with your 2024 Ford Explorer.
Fuel Economy
The fuel economy for the Ford Explorer varies depending on the engine and drivetrain you select. Based on the EPA's ratings for the 2023 Ford Explorer, it gets the following miles-per-gallon ratings:
- With the 2.3-liter engine and rear-wheel drive, the Explorer gets 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, with a combined 24 mpg.
- With the same engine but four-wheel-drive, the Explorer gets 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, with a combined 23 mpg.
- The 3.0-liter engine with rear-wheel drive gets 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, with a combined 21 mpg.
- That same engine with four-wheel drive gets 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, with a combined 20 mpg.
- The 3.3-liter Hybrid 6 engine with rear-wheel drive gets 27 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, with a combined 27 mpg.
- The same engine with four-wheel drive gets 23 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, with a combined 25 mpg.
Select Explorer trims and towing capacity may cause the miles-per-gallon ratings to differ from the above.
Cargo and Storage Space
Based on information about the 2023 Explorer, the 2024 model will have three rows of seats, and you can fold the available PowerFold third-row seat flat to create extra storage space. When all three rows of seats are upright, you can get up to 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space. If you fold both the second and third rows of seats flat, you can get up to 87.8 cubic feet of storage space.
You'll also find plenty of cubby holes and nooks to carry your small personal items, such as your water bottle, sunglasses, and smartphone. Choose the available cargo management system to help keep items in the back secure and organized, and use the reverse plastic bedding of the cargo area if you're carrying muddy or wet supplies.
